MONTHLY GOALS – JUNE

May 31, 2010

We completed last week’s conditioning goals, and have the pain to show for it!!  On Saturday, we did 250 crunches!

From now on, we’ll work on goals for the MONTH, rather than for just a week.  So, here are our goals for JUNE:

Speed: faster kicks, quick maneuvering in ginga, and advance/retreat movements.

Conditioning: crunches and working out at HOME (crunches, arm/shoulder strengthening with handstands, etc.)

Commitment and Dedication to Capoeira, and Our School:

We currently have a very small group, and no facility to train.  It will take the effort of each of us in order to GROW OUR CLASS, and SECURE A SPACE.
- Look for potential spaces to train (gyms, school gyms, community centers, etc).  Call and find out as much info as you can, and pass it along to Professora Onda (504) 287-9061.
- Copy and/or distribute flyers (at coffee shops, churches, community centers, libraries, anywhere people hang out).  Gafanhota will design a generic flyer by the end of the week.  If you have access to free or cheap copies, print out as many as you can to divide among the class for distribution.
- It’s really important that each of us regularly attend class.  Even if you’re having financial difficulties, come train anyway.  Professora Onda will work with you.

ANNOUNCEMENT:
Professora Onda will be out of town on the following dates, and therefore unable to teach class:
June 12th, 14th, 16th, 19th

We will still meet to train on these days.  We can take turns leading the class.  The first class should probably be lead by Ninja, since he will have been present in the previous classes.  Gafanhota will be out of town June 4-9.

“The sun is always rising.  We cannot hold back the day.”

New Class Format!

May 3, 2010

Great class tonight! See y’all in class on Wednesday (6-8pm) at Our Lady of Lourdes (Napoleon and Freret). Class format has changed – Music and Language will now be taught on a different day. We’ll now spend more time on Mondays and Wednesdays warming up, conditioning, and doing performance prep. Each class will end with a roda, including solos, so that everyone can demonstrate what they’ve learned.

A.S.O. Demo TODAY!!!

May 1, 2010
Hi guys! Let’s meet at Our Lady of Lourdes at 4PM to leave at 4:15pm on our way to BR. We could not get a location to train with the group Palmares. They usually train outdoors on Saturday and it looks like rain. So we’ll meet up with them at LSU. This email has a map, can anyone print a copy for our directions or write out the directions? I’m working overtime today, and I’ll get off work at 2pm. You can call me with ?’s or concerns. See you soon!

Event: A.S.O Annual Banquet
Date: Saturday May 1st 2010
Time: 7pm to 10pm (doors open at 6:30)
Location: Cotillion Ballroom (LSU Union)

Event Description: The African Students Organization is proud to present their annual ASO Banquet this spring 2010. This year, we are inspired by the African Diaspora, and the cultural impact it has in our society and the LSU community. Our theme, “THE AFRICAN DIASPORA: BRANCHES FROM THE SAME TREE (A scattering of seeds),” will be the base of this significant event located on the LSU campus. We will showcase various cultural performances including salsa dancing from Cuba, capoeira from Brazil, Hip Hop from the USA, Dancehall from Jamaica, and of course traditional and modern African dancing, along with other genres of performing arts, and a taste fair from the motherland. We hope that you take part in this event and help us make it the success it ought to be.

Hi students!  The UCA Tuscon Batizado this past weekend was a PHENOMENAL experience.  And it’s piqued interest in our group; lots of capoeiristas now want to come to visit us in New Orleans!

Let’s keep training!  No specific goals for this week.  On Saturday, we’ll be headed to Baton Rouge for a demonstration LSU’s African Students Organization (ASO) annual banquet, so there will be no class

See you in class!!  And in Baton Rouge!

Time: 7pm to 10pm (doors open at 6:30)
Location: Cotillion Ballroom (LSU Union)

Weekly Goals – 4/18/2010

April 18, 2010

Hi students!  My apologies for the gap in blog posts.  Moving forward, we’ll be posting weekly again.  This past week, we learned the song “Aruanda”, and learned the mechanics of the floreio “Au Sem Mão.”

In preparation for our participation in this weekend’s UCA batizado in Tuscon, we will be focusing this week on stamina in the roda, call-and-response, and etiquette.

Movement – We’ll be mostly playing in the roda this week to build stamina.

Music – Recognizing the berimbau rhythms and focus on call-and-respond (including responding even when you don’t know the lyrics!)

Language – Revisiting greetings, titles, and other formalities

REMINDER – this Saturday, there is no class (so no Dance) since most of us will be in Tucson.  Those not going to Tucson should meet on Saturday to train.  We’ll talk during the week to schedule.

See you in class!!

Saturday Class Cancelled

April 16, 2010

Hi students. I have a mandatory training at work tomorrow and so I won’t be available to teach class from 10am – 12pm. Anyone that is available after 2pm to meet at the park at Carrollton and Claiborne for the CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL HAPPENING THERE, SHOULD COME and help with a demonstration of capoeira. Also, if you’re able to go there around 11am to manage our table and hand out flyers, please send me a txt or voicemail.

Thanks guys, and my apologies.

Weekly Goals – Week of 3/22/10

March 22, 2010

Hi students!
I realize that I did not post goals for the week of 3/15-3/20. However, your accomplishments for this period were great! You improved your flow in the roda, we learned to sing “Ouvi Falar”, a song by Professor Cravo of Our very own UCA, and you experienced a capoeira tournament including a formal roda and capoeira solos.
This week we will be focusing on etiquette in the roda, capoeira rhythms and asking permissions.

Movement: 150+ chutais (kicks)
Music: toques do berimbau
Language: perguntais e licensa
Dance: afoxe!

See you in class!
